A jam session of art and poetry between Brent Terry and Lorette C. Luzajic. This project came from a three-year groove of call and response, sometimes with Brent responding to an art square in poetry, sometimes with Lorette responding to poems with squares, with friends tuned-in to the same frequency. What resulted was a trip up and down the dial, a sort of four-dimensional, total-immersion radio experience. We present to you Radio Free Nebraska, a collection of poems after art by Lorette and art after poems by Brent. It is an ekphrastic project heavily inspired as well by music. All of the mixed media collage paintings are album-cover-sized in their originals, known to Lorette’s collectors as “the Squares.”Brent Terry, a Pen-Faulkner nominee, has written a bevy of books, both poetry and fiction, and a trademark blend of smart, heart, and witty repartee make them knockouts. That’s what he’s known for in the classroom, too, where he tricks young bored students into a lifelong passion for poetry through his musical messengers like Patti Smith and Michael Stipe. A former semi-elite athlete, he also inspires old dogs to new kicks on mountain and meadow running trails. He writes about all of these things, as well as Dr. Pepper, art, the infinite jest, and our melting world. “I am just a raw nerve, a quivering antenna picking up the signals the world is sending, then responding as musically and imagistically as possible,” Terry stated in Eastern Magazine.Lorette C. Luzajic is a gift, a freak of nature from the mythic North. Her paintings and collages are what happens when the membrane rips, when what’s inside gets out, what’s outside gets in, and the whole thing becomes a writhing soup of image and music, beckoning the viewer to dive in and swim. Her work is the bazillion-way intersection of the multi-verse, where residents of all the pocket universes get together to sing and dance. An award-winning mixed media artist, Luzajic has collectors in at least forty countries. She is also a writer whose works are mostly inspired by visual art. She married her twin passions in 2015 and started The Ekphrastic Review, the world’s flagship journal of ekphrasis.NB: Brent and Lorette wrote each other’s bio for this project. Read more
