As suggested by its name, this sweet-scented lupine thrives on sandy or gravelly banks near water. This perennial is native to the Pacific Northwest but can be grown in many different regions of the country. This wildflower was first found near the Columbia River and described in 1828 by Scotsman David Douglas, the first botanist to methodically find and classify over 250 plants in the northwestern region of the United States.The name Lupine comes from the Latin "lupus," meaning wolf. This refers to the folk belief that this plant took nutrients from the soil. Ironically, this plant actually improves the soil because of its nitrogen fixing abilities.
